Living Water Global Initiative was founded in 2014 by Kim Smith, a former stay-at-home Mom and English teacher. After going on several mission trips, she began to see a growing need for an organization that served in Eastern Europe, Asia and India—places she was drawn to serve. It was on a mission trip to Kiev, Ukraine in February 2014 that the idea began to take shape. As she sat in the Borispol airport in front of the Lufthansa office at 3:00 in the morning, waiting to be evacuated with the other missionaries, she began to hear a Voice that would call her to open her own non-profit to meet the needs of others like her called to serve. She would do it with integrity, transparency, effective communication, and the best and brightest people she could find to help her to make it the finest non-profit organization around for mission work. That day Living Water Global Initiative was born.

She returned home from that trip to Ukraine with 2 things — an invitation from her wonderful host family to return and that nagging in her heart to form her own non-profit — one that would not only encompass the programs she dreamed of having in place and the places she dreamed in her heart of going, but would also serve the people who wanted to go on the mission trips.  There would be correct and enough information with every trip, clear and constant communication throughout, clarity about who you were dealing with in the organization,  the ability to get in touch with a real person at all times, proper communications with families in emergency situations, and on and on. Every day brought a new idea and another reason to start the non-profit.

But it would be no small task…and it hasn’t been. The learning curve has been tremendous, especially for someone my age who majored in British literature, who’s now having to do projected 2 year budgets for the IRS and learning about licensing and government rules not only in this country, but in Vietnam and Ukraine, as well. Soon, it will be India, as well.

My biggest friend of all has been Jesus. I can’t talk about Him overseas because it isn’t safe. He understands. But this was all His idea. All I ever wanted to do since I was a little girl was fly in an airplane all over the world and teach school.

Then a lady, whom I love very much, told me something about 2 years ago before I went on my first mission trip. When I asked her why God would put these desires inside of me to see the world and to teach but not make a way for them to happen — because my husband didn’t like to travel and the public school system hadn’t worked out for me — she said something that would prove to be so wise. She said, “He would never put a desire in your heart that He wasn’t prepared to make happen, Kim. It’s there for a reason.” Not long after that, I was invited to go on my first mission trip to teach English in Beijing, China. It was so much fun! And I’m still in contact with 3 of my students. From that moment on, my heart was on fire and I knew exactly how those desires were meant to be met. It wasn’t as a tourist or in a classroom, but as part of the culture with an interpreter. And it was a blast!

Where did the name come from? Living Water comes from a prayer that same woman said over me long before I started doing mission work, when I was still in a very dark place, not really sure I had much left to give anyone. Her prayer was “that the Living Water of Jesus would bubble up inside of me and overflow like a river from me, giving me new life and new vision.”

Yes, indeed.
